About The Event
Visit to the Excavation of a Romano-British Farmhouse in Westbury-sub-Mendip
There were several small farmsteads in the parish during the Roman period, probably owned by local people who had adopted the Roman way of life. This trip is an opportunity to see the remains of a substantial farmhouse that probably supplied food to the garrison and miners at Charterhouse, and traded at the local markets.
- Parking at the farm is now more restricted than in previous years, so I suggest visitors park in Station Road, BA5 1EY and walk along the Strawberry Line Path - the attachment gives details.
- If anyone would like a longer walk, park near Easton Village Hall and take the Strawberry Line Path from there.
- Meet at 10.30 at the Double Gates
- Car sharing is advisable where possible
- The fields are mainly level, but boots or strong shoes are essential, particularly if there's been recent rain.
- Unfortunately, the 126 bus is not a practical option because of the timetable.
